School of Building and Civil Engineering Educational Space

Fourth Year Project

As part of an interdisciplinary group we undertook the design of a for a collaborative educational space the School of Building and Civil Engineering at Munster Technological University.

Concept Approach

The concept to this project looked to location of the site first - Bichopstown Co.Cork, through analysis of the history and environment we developed a concept based on the four elements - earth, fire wind and water. In essence these elements were to represent life, as or group aimed to give new life to the dark and cramped courtyard.

Design Approach

In order to create a space that collaboration, wellbeing, and sustainability, a biophilic design approach was used.

The design of the Educational Centre uses an open plan layout with natural materials, such as locally sourced oak  for the finishes. Greenery is spread across the two floors in order to purify the air quality and aid the students wellbeing.

The ground floor of the centre is designated to more social areas, including tiered seating, a games area, ping pong tables, along with a number of study rooms. The first floor features a more formal study set-up Most of the floor is taken up by group seating for collaborative work, there is a presentation area where students can practice their presentation spaces, and a sensory room.
